Drilling a hole under the water line

Winter is on the way

The fall is working it’s windy and cold magic while the Winter is luring just around the corner. Hoping to save my self trips to the marina’s bathroom at minus something in the night; I decided to have a toilet installed in the boat. Trying to save the cost of actually raising the boat and paying way to much for that; I decided to drill a hole under the water line while it was still in the water.

Consulting the old experienced craftsman and Sailors aka. My dad. This turned out to be no big deal. You just wrap a rope around the mast just about the horns and extend the main halyard… and pull… hmm. To a newbie that sounds like some kind of daemon magic.

The recipe

Here is the recipe we followed

1. Extend your main halyard as much as you can with heavy rope. The halyard is the highest possible area to pull from which makes it easier to heel over the boat.
2. Add heavy rope around the mast at center point; in this case just about the horns. This is to add protection and to a certain extend relieve the main halyard.
3. Use a block at the main halyard rope. We used a rope block. Meaning we wrapped the rope around a loop several times as this “geared” the pulling force
4. Heel and pull till you have the desired angle, secure the rope.
5. Don’t move stuff back and forth on the boat, except if you really need to. The boats entire weight is hanging in 2 ropes. Don’t push it.

Anyways we were 3 guys and we followed dads recipe and all rope was attached to the marina as far away as possible. At the end the rope was made into a block system to enabled to “gear” the pulling strength.

It worked and after 10 minutes of work Frigg was nicely leaned over for a total of 1 hour while we drilled a hole for the exist of the toilet waste. Adding the true hole and letting the adhesive sealant cure.
