Dragged Shutter

I love seeing the photography from the big races such as Volvo Ocean race and America’s cup, so during a short sail I brought out the trusty manfrotto tripod and the Nikon DSLR… time for some wet photography.

But the sea is such a wild place and i find that capturing it in 1/500 seconds and faster is just not doing it any justice… With the aid of a relatively Variable ND filter i can push it down to seconds long exposure. Here is the full “recipe”

Nikon APS-C DSLR

Sigma 18-35

Filters: Polariser + Variable ND filter

Steady as a tripod

With everything bouncing all over the place and nothing really standing still, the trick is to find a shutter speed that can capture something that is so so stable for the camera.

Fold out the heavy legs of the tripod and press your camera rig down! With your composition ready you keep shooting to get something that work. For example, the boom doesn’t always move and neither does the mast and hull so they should always be somewhat sharp.

I keept between 1 second to 1/2 second for these shots.

Post

Not much to it; i downloaded the photos from the camera onto my smartphone and edited all of them in SnapSeed app. Can highly recommend Snapseed as a photo editing app. Fast, easy and full of fun!
