What I check before i leave the boat

It is the holidays and I’m leaving to spend some time at the family. I wanna go and be at peace with the boat. Being a liveaboard there is just a few more things to check before you leave the boat by itself for a longer periode. You wanna prepare for the worst; heavy rain, flooding and storm gusts. At least that is what we can risk here in Denmark.

Inside.

  • Remove
  • Garbage
  • Organics
  • Clean the sink
  • Other misc stuff that can stink up the join
  • Fill the toilet with fresh water instead of sea water (sea water stinks quickly)
  • Turn off the fridge
  • Check for water and other in the bilge (Its just good boat hygiene)
  • Turn off land power if you have that option

Outside.

  1. Lock and secure every opening.
  2. Double check every seal is well. No need to come home to a wet locker
  3. Secure the sail. Especially the front sail so it wont unfurl duing windy weather
  4. Tie the loose rope high o they wont lie and sooke in water.
  5. Chafing! Check all mooring ropes for already chafed points and think ahead. Can there be more chafing while you are gone. Fix it!

Hopefully with this short guide you can leave your floating home and be at peace of mind.
