Don’t buy a boat before you read this
Why would a live aboard tell you to not buy a boat? Sorry for the click bait kinda title, but let’s be honest; if you are thinking off moving on a boat, you are properly searching for the critical opinion.
The list
It’s a matter of listing the issues of having a boat to live on, if you can say *uck it, I’ll enjoy that” you are golden. Go for it!
- People think you are crazy, poor or semi homeless. It really happens that people think that; for some it is sooo out of the norm to live on a boat.
- Cheap on one side, expensive on the other side. The harbor fee is often cheaper then paying rent, but the older the boat or the more wear you put on the boat; the more maintenance it requires and that can be expensive
- Don’t buy a boat and not use what it was made for. Really; if you buy a motor or sailboat and just stay still with it; you are better off just buying a box and putting it on pontoons. Engines where made for running, sails where made for being in the wind!
- There is always work. Always, you can’t be bored…never. There is always something on a boat to do. The difference between house and a boat I don’t know…but there is always something that can be cleaned, varnish, maintained, rebuild, upgraded, sanded, painted and the list goes on.
If you are out there thinking of buying a boat; and you want my opinion for any reasons. Send me a mail. himself@kevinpedersen.dk
