Materials and enjoying the “Fix it yourself”

The materialistic side

Continuing the answers on the question on “Do you feel more free?”, here I answer the part question of the materialistic side of being a liveaboard. The joy of fix it yourself.
In Denmark the harbour fees are a thing that seemed like it stayed constant forever. While property have been going up, the harbor fees are pretty constant and low.
In my home city of Aarhus an average room fit for a student would average around 500-600 US dollars and if you want bigger then the price goes up. This is living in the centre, of course outskirts makes it cheaper. Anyway harbour fees for me is 180 US dollars.
Some of you are right now thinking that’s cheap!..but exspect your self to be saving up for upgrades and fixes. Like a house owner; there is always something to fix…but in all justice I think boat owners have a billion more things to fix then house owners…and boats are located in an enviroment that just makes everything break.
What I save on living on a boat I put a side for enjoying life more and future repairs and upgrades for the boat.
I save 300-400 US dollars by living on a boat…but those money I put on the side for when things break; and they DO! Other times I can just enjoy the joy of buying some new and awesome for the savings; but normally it is repairing breaking stuff.

Enjoying fix it yourself

Pretty much every repair is up to you. Get down and dirty when the engine needs attention and when toilet *******. You have no landlord to call.
But I love the feeling of having to fix stuff my self; because then you get to appreciate what you have and where it comes from. You kind of get to own the material.
But honestly I moved on the boat because of the financial side of it; mixed a bit with the experience of sailing. That has since then changed. The financial and materialistic side is really not important to me anymore. New, and more human side have emerged; didn’t really see them coming, but they are the subject of the next slides.
